Canada is a wonderful place to migrate to and settle down. A great place to have your kids grow up in a Global Scenario with a broader perspective on many issues. A country where you will meet people from different ethnicities, culture, religion and race. Hence, Canada is open to a lot of immigration from all over the world.

What happens when you land here? Are you prepared?

You have arrived here with your life’s savings, which generally amounts to between CDN $10000 to $25000, hoping that it will be enough to support you through the first couple of years because you are going to get a job immediately or in a month or so.

Most of the Immigration, that takes place in the professional category is formed of educated, senior professionals from other parts of the world, both English and non-English speaking. Language certainly becomes a major barrier because of the accent, pronunciation, etc. Reality becomes a little clearer.

Even if you do speak English that is good enough, you do not have any of the so-called “ Canadian Experience”. So you start looking for a Job to survive and pay your bills rent, groceries, insurance and of course what you get is a Job that will pay your bills. God bless you if you have kids, then both husband and wife have to work to pay for childcare, which is almost what your spouse earns, to begin with.

It is almost a year now and your money you carried with you, is slowly dwindling away. Both are working hard, just managing to stay afloat with the bills and child care and somewhere thinking about your decision to migrate to this wonderful place on earth called Canada. Not only have you compromised and accepted a lower level job, but also you are also unable to pursue your true interests and passion. Was it worth the sacrifice?

Is there a Magic Formula to Succeed in Canada? No - there is NONE.

What can work for you is the following though:

Come here with an open mind, willing to work hard and play hard.

Sharpen your English language skills and get equivalency in your education

Better still, join a course that can help you pursue your interests career wise

Be grateful, that your family / kids will have good education and healthcare

Most Important of all, be patient for a couple of years and things will fall in place

How to look for a Job in this Changing Economy?

In the past 2 weeks, I have personally seen strong indicators that things are moving up for the better. Media News items and articles and interviews have all pointed towards the same Optimism in the Employment Market. Even Recruiting Agencies have reported that Clients have started to call in with requirements.

Well the Worst is hopefully over.

You need to now get prepared for the coming upswing, especially those that are looking for a Job.

STEPS to FOLLOW in your JOB SEARCH:

Create a Master Resume with all your experience and add everything you can in it. Save it on your desktop titled Master.

Create at least 3-5 more resumes from it depending on your function and title. For e.g Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, Financial Analyst, Finance Manager, Asst Controller
Each of these resumes will focus on the skills and experiences as required by the Title and the Job you are applying to.

Basically what I am referring to is CUSTOMIZE your resume to the role that you are applying to.

Then go to different Job Boards like Monster and Workopolis and save each of these resumes with their different titles.

NOW – when you are applying to a particular JOB, you can CHOOSE the resume that best fits the role and then hit SEND, instead of sending the same resume out to different roles.
You must understand that, every position advertised gets at least 150 – 200 resumes. Imagine the plight of the Recruiter screening them.

Which is why when you are able to DIFFERENTIATE and CUSTOMIZE, your resume is more likely to be read by the Recruiter and hence better the chances of getting a call for an Interview.

Looking for the Next Job - Hopefully your Dream Job!

In any discussion about Careers, Job Search or Employment, one always hears this term mentioned - "My current job is not my Dream Job".

What is a DREAM JOB? Let us attempt to understand some parameters linked to a Dream Job. Some statements will throw a lot of light on understanding the components that make up a Dream Job.

I love my Job - How many times do you hear this? Maybe a lot, maybe not so often. This is the first parameter or indicator that whatever your role, your company, people you work with, industry you work in - you just love it and hence excel in it.

I am passionate about what I do - There is a cause involved. No matter what it is, how important it is to the world outside of you, it means a lot to you. Obviously you put in a lot of effort and heart and soul into it. Obviously you are very good at it.

I would not trade my job for anything - Whoever said that MONEY is the most important Motivator - Nonsense. It has been proven time and time again that Job Satisfaction and Recognition are way up on the scale as compared to Money.

I have a fantastic BOSS - Have you ever wondered why some people in the same organization are extremely happy whereas others are miserable? Inquire about their relationship with their Bosses/supervisors. Employees that have a positive relationship with their bosses are always motivated to perform better and better. Alternatively, employees that are constantly threatened by their superiors are mostly under producing or are non productive.

I will continue even if I win a Lottery - says a lot about the individual, the job, the company and most certainly the Boss. This is an empowered employee that loves the job and is truly passionate about it. A windfall gain is not going to change anything.

I look forward to a Monday - WOW! Do people actually say this? Maybe they do not have a life? Maybe they have problems at Home? Actually the answer is NO to the last 2 questions. Yes, I say it all the time on a Friday or on the weekend. Believe me, I have an amazing family and am blessed with their love.

So now we have some insights into the makings of a DREAM JOB. Ask yourself these questions and you will know, when you answer YES.

Do I really love my job?
Am I passionate about my job?
Would I leave for more money?
How is my Boss?
Would I continue working even if I won a LOTTERY?
Do I look forward to a MONDAY?

If the answer to the above mentioned questions is NO, then look for your DREAM JOB.

Find a Job - Get a Job - New Methods that Work......

Current Economical Gloom, layoffs, companies closing down, credit crunch in the US affecting the global economy, etc, etc

This is all we hear - no matter where we look. In spite of the current situation in the employment market, I suggest we deal with the employment situation in a different manner.

My humble recommendations are as follows:

1) Stay Energized - I know it is easier said than done. Keep your spirits high, no matter what, because you control how you feel within. Stay away from the doom media and choose not to be negative. Enjoy the little things in life that give you joy like playing with your kids, a walk in the park, a quiet dinner with a loved one, etc.

2) Use Different Methodologies - Do not depend solely on the Internet Job Boards in your attempt to look for another job, but make use of Networking, Referrals, etc.

3) Elevator Pitch - Sharpen your 30 second pitch. I am referring to your condensed introduction of professional skills and value add.

4) Focus on Benefits - Tailor your resume and applications for jobs based on benefits accrued to the employer than just on your skills. e.g. how your skills can add to the bottom line of any organization? Cost saving, revenue generation, etc

5) Look for an Alternative - Research and look for alternative means of generating passive Income. e.g part time work, consulting, internet marketing, affiliate marketing, etc.

Finally, make a list of things you already have, like family, home, car, job, friends, health so that you can VALUE that and be THANKFUL to God.

Believe in yourself and Have Faith.

January has gone by.................

I must ask of myself - whether I have been able to reflect on my Goals and get down to maybe just 3 main Goals I would like to achieve this year - 2008.

Could be something like:

I am making a $100k this year ( notice the positive and present component here)
I am going on a cruise for 2 weeks to the islands with my family by November 2008
I am so buying my new car - maybe a BMW or a Lexus by Sept 2008.

OR like this:

I feel good cause I am 25 lbs lighter
I am feeling more energetic since I stopped smoking
I am working out for 30 mins at least 3 times a week.

The above is just an example to make you understand that these goals are in the present, specific, measurable and things that I am passionate about. Goals that do not have any of these characteristics, DO NOT GET ACHIEVED and of course there are umpteen reasons you can give, excuses you can find, etc.

GO AHEAD AND WRITE THEM DOWN IN BOLD
PUT THEM UP WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM AT ALL TIMES
TELL 3 PEOPLE ABOUT THEM

2008..........Exciting Times Ahead

Happy Holidays to all..................

2007 is almost over and here comes 2008.This is a great time to reflect on what happened in the past year and select all the great things that happened to you and your loved ones. Be grateful and thankful for them. You will attract more of those in 2008.

Think about all the GOALS you achieved and also those you didn't. Focus more on the Achieved Goals and plan for this 2008 now.
What do you want? What makes you happy? What gives you immense joy?
Where do you want to be by the end of 2008?
What do you want to make this year in dollar $ terms?
Where do you want your career to move to?
What relationships you want to strengthen further?
Where do plan to travel for vacation this year? With who?

Just putting these down in writing will help you a great deal in moving towards them. Read them everyday without fail till you internalise them. Think about them all the time.

The UNIVERSE will align itself so that you achieve your GOALS, thru the Law of Attraction.

Finally, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Vacation Pressures

We have all heard of Stress due to ones job, Stress in a relationship, Stress due to health reasons, etc but who has ever heard of Stress due to the Summer or Stress due to vacation pressure. Have not experienced these, yet?

Let me explain…………

Fall is in the air and soon everyone around you is looking forward to a cold winter. Well with the onset of winter, comes the add on pressure of vacationing, going off to someplace warm and exotic, or skiing in the mountains. WHOA! That’s a lot of pressure and all this in addition to your stress in the work place due to your job. Do not fall into this abyss, as it is never ending and difficult to get out of.Are you equipped to handle this or are you going to break up and shatter?

Here is a simple 3 Step Formula I use very successfully:

Listen well to your colleagues when they talk feverishly about the trip they have planned and are excited about, without it affecting you any way. You are now just a sounding board and actually helping colleagues let off some steam, a release mechanism.

Acknowledge the communication and empathize with them i.e. Make them feel that you are happy about their plans. Support their initiative and enthusiasm.

Continue with your work, now that they have got it out of their system and you have got it out of your head. This is the most important component of the formula as it helps you to move on.

When you as an immigrant, come to this country and are struggling to get into the workforce because of the so called “lack of Canadian Experience” and then finally, you land a job – do not let this façade of a vacation or a summer getaway, stress you out in anyway.

Focus on your work, put in the effort, do well and then in a another year or so maybe you can think of a vacation because you will have earned it by then.

You are what you think you are...................

I have read this umpteen times in self development books, heard it on CD's and tapes and yet fascinated about the meaning of this statement

YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE...........................

In the Staffing Industry, I come across candidates that I interview, that are frustrated and depressed about their JOB SEARCH. Whining, blaming the market, country and everything around them BUT themselves. They have a very low self worth and are willing to accept any job, at any salary, that comes their way.

My advice to them is what I have written above - Think highly of yourself and others around you will see the same. It will appear in your walk, talk, confidence, self esteem and relationships. Everything in your life will be affected by your THINKING. So be very careful of the conversation with yourself, as it will determine your future success or failure.

THOUGHTS lead to ACTION that in turn leads to BEHAVIOUR that forms HABITS that builds CHARACTER which determines the PATH OF YOUR LIFE.

It is funny I I say this because a week back, I was interviewing a candidate that had just come to Canada a couple of months back. An educated, senior Finance professional and he remarked

HAVE A FANTASTIC NEW YEAR!

I realize that all of us or most of us were extremely busy planning for the Holiday Season, going shopping crazy. We are all into the gifting scene and concerned about what our family and friends will think about our gift. This is truly the season of GIVING. However……………

WHY NOT GIVE SOMETHING TO YOURSELF FIRST?

A SUCCESSFUL 2007! AN AMAZING YEAR NEXT YEAR!

Which now brings me to the main issue that I wish to talk about - GOAL SETTING. Have you heard people say? DARE TO DREAM BIG – What are they referring to?

GOALS!
DREAMS!
VISION!
OBJECTIVES!
WHERE YOU WISH TO BE?
WHERE YOU WANT TO GO?

Goal Setting is not just related to Quotas for Sales people, but refers to Goals related to every aspect of a Human Being’s life. Goals can be Social, Financial, Emotional and Spiritual in nature. They can also be Strategic, Tactical, Long Term or Short Term. Alternatively they can be Life Goals, Career Goals, Relationship Goals, Parenting Goals, etc.

Goals are very much like the Lighthouse in the sea on a dark night that helps the ships to steer into docks safely. They are like the leading light in a person’s life. Goals help us to stay on path to achieving whatever it is that we want to achieve. They prevent us from drifting away in the Flow of Life.

For this discussion I would like to focus on Career Goals and see how to go about achieving them.

Start by dreaming big, thinking without boundaries, assuming that for a moment you cannot FAIL.
Ask yourself these questions.
What activities do you like or enjoy most?
What are you passionate about in your life?
What makes you happy?
What makes you tick?
What do people come to you for, most of the time?
Where would you be in your Job/Career five or even ten years from today?
Would you like to pursue your education? Which field?
What role would you be playing?
What would be your area of expertise?
Which industry would you be associated with?
What level in an organization do you see yourself at?
What type of an organization would you be leading?
How much money are you making then?
What kind of a Lifestyle would you be living?
What car would you be driving?
Where would you want to go for a vacation?
Which area would you be living in?
What kind of a home are you living in?
How much time would you be spending with your family?
How much time would you be spending with yourself?

The beauty of this exercise is that you will see how you move from Career Goals to your Personal Life Goals. They are intertwined and what I mean by that is – as you achieve your primary goals, the result of that achievement, spills over into other areas of your life and you actually start fulfilling your other objectives as well.

The Secret to all of this is to:

THINK REALLY BIG

DREAM WITHOUT BARRIERS

and then as the next step VISUALISE the DREAM as though you are LIVING IT in the PRESENT. Basically write down on card, statements, that express your enjoying your goal in the present. Eg. I am loving my job as a General Manager that pays $100k + Benefits OR I love my Black colored LEXUS. This is a very powerful exercise, as it will align forces in the universe that you are unaware of, to work in a manner that is in sync with your GOALS.

I know you might be thinking that TALK IS CHEAP. Well, let me tell you something. Following the same principles that I talk about, I have not only doubled my Income from my Job every year for the last 3 years, but have also achieved fulfillment and happiness in the process. I am not just wealthier financially, but also rich emotionally and much closer to my family.

So Friends, take my advice and INVEST some time in yourself and make 2007 an AMAZING YEAR FOR YOU!

Ideal Resume for a Job In Canada?

WHAT SHOULD MY RESUME IDEALLY LOOK LIKE FOR A JOB IN CANADA?

A question that I am asked very frequently by New Immigrants, when I meet them for an Interview. I do advise them on this issue; however the following components need to be addressed. This MUST be done before one starts applying for employment in Canada.

Generally a resume MUST HAVE the following:

CONTACT DETAILS: This includes the name of the applicant, address, phone numbers and email address. Please drop the PHOTOGRAPH, as it is definitely not required. Furthermore, there is no need at all to mention your Age, Marital Status and your Residency, Country of Origin and religion. There are laws governing these issues in Canada and hence they may not be the basis, on which any individual may be discriminated against in terms of employment.

Clarity of an OBJECTIVE at the beginning of a resume can certainly help in inducing the Reader to continue reading.
Eg – Looking for an opportunity in the area of Financial Analysis and Planning, within an Organization that is value driven and customer oriented
OR
Looking for a Supervisory position in Sales, within the Consumer Packaged Goods Industry.

Here is an EXECUTIVE SUMMARY of the individuals experience and skills.

Eg – Controllership experience of over 10 years in ManufacturingDesignated Accounting and Finance professional Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills Managed large groups of staff ranging from 5 – 15 Have been exposed to Public Company Reporting for over 5 years Proficient in the usage of computers and various softwares

WORK EXPERIENCE: A Chronological submission of employers worked with in your work life, beginning with the Most Current one. Important components to note here are - the name of the employer, tenure of employment with month/year, title of position and brief of the company worked in. Then you may describe the role you performed.
Eg. – General Manager Jan 2000 – Aug 2006
A Manufacturing Organization with Revenues - $100 million and 2000 employees
Role Description

ACHIEVEMENTS: Do not misinterpret this as a role addition or activity performed. This is a specific mention of an Accomplishment, where you have done more than required and gone that extra mile.
Eg – Managed to bring down the month end closing days from 5 to 3 OR Successfully implemented a Costing system that resulted in an annual savings of $2 million across the company

Listing of your degrees, certifications and so on.

Please list the most current one first with details like – Degree obtained, year of certification, Institution that certified you and location.
Eg – CA – ICAO – 2004 B.Com – University of Waterloo – 2000

SOFTWARE SKILLS: This is a comprehensive listing of the various softwares that you are proficient in like SAP, Lawson, Great Plains, Excel, Access, and ACCPAC.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: This is not a must have for resumes, however cannot harm you in anyway. You may want to mention your involvement in a ROTARY CLUB for example, in addition to your association with CICA, ICAO, etc.

Overall, a resume that has all or most of the above mentioned components stands a better chance of getting its owner an Interview than a resume that doesn’t.

In any discussion about Careers, Job Search or Employment, one always hears this term mentioned - "My current job is not my Dream Job".

What is a DREAM JOB? Let us attempt to understand some parameters linked to a Dream Job. Some statements will throw a lot of light on understanding the components that make up a Dream Job.

I love my Job - How many times do you hear this? Maybe a lot, maybe not. This is the first parameter or indicator that whatever your role, your company, people you work with, industry you work in - you just love it and hence excel in it.

I am passionate about what I do - There is a cause involved. No matter what it is, how important it is to the world outside of you, it means a lot to you. Obviously you put in a lot of effort and heart and soul into it. Obviously you are very good at it.

I would not trade my job for anything - Whoever said that MONEY is the most important Motivator - Nonsense. It has been proven time and time again that Job Satisfaction and Recognition are way up on the scale as compared to Money.

I have a fantastic BOSS - Have you ever wondered, why some people in the same organization are extremely happy whereas others are miserable. Inquire about their relationship with their Bosses/supervisors. Employees that have a positive relationship with their bosses are always motivated to perform better and better. Alternatively, employees that are constantly threatened by their superiors are mostly under producing or are non productive.

I will continue doing what I am doing even if I win a LOTTERY - says a lot about the individual, the job, the company and most certainly the Boss. This is an empowered employee that loves the job and is truly passionate about it. A windfall gain is not going to change anything.

I look forward to a Monday - WOW! Do people actually say this? Maybe they do not have a life? Maybe they have problems at Home? Actually the answer is NO to the last 2 questions. Yes, I say it all the time on a Friday or on the weekend. Believe me, I have an amazing family and am blessed with their love.

So now we have some insights into the makings of a DREAM JOB. Ask yourself these questions and you will know, when you answer YES.

Do I really love my job
Am I passionate about my job?
Would I leave for more money?
How is my Boss?
Would I continue working even if I won a LOTTERY?
Do I look forward to a MONDAY?
If the answer to the above mentioned questions is NO, then look for your DREAM JOB. Believe me it is OUT THERE!

Art of Resume Writing

Resume Writing is not just a skill but an ART.

Why do I say this?
Having spent a good last 6 years in the Staffing, Executive Search industry and a solid 20 years prior to that in the Corporate World - I have developed quite a flair for reading resumes. Here are some of the questions that my candidates ask me all the time:

Should I write my resume as per available Templates?
Professionally formatted resumes can make the difference between being employed and remaining unemployed. Resume writers can charge anything between $100 - $500 for a good resume. Templates are available free or better ones from $20 - $50. Remember that the objective of the resume is only to get you an Interview Call.

How many pages should my resume be?
Resumes are like a calling card or a business card. They should be clear, concise and at the same time be able to tickle the curiousity of the hiring manager or the person screening the resumes. Pages should vary depending on the role and experience of the candidate. eg. An Entry level position might warrant a 2 page version whereas a Vice President's resume might be as long as 4-6 pages.

Should I type my resume or hand write it?
Most resumes that I come across, are neatly typed and sent by emails. Hardly does anyone request hard copies of resumes, unless you are applying for a job with a private mom and pop kind of organization. Gone are the days of the hand written organization.

Do I modify my resume as per the role I am applying for?
Most certainly! You need not lie and mis-represent yourself in anyway. You may highlight certain components of your resume depending on the role requirement and your actual experience.

May I use colored paper for my resume?
I do not recommend it. Maybe in a certain industry like Fashion, Entertainment, etc it may work. Which means that I do not support colored fonts as well, since email is being used predominantly.
